  • Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi’s natural crown sparks a hair-raising debate

Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi’s natural crown sparks a hair-raising debate

Here sits the crown, beautifully so on my kinky coarse hair. I hope I make South Africa proud,” said Zozibini Tunzi in her first official Instagram post as Miss SA 2019.

Since the 25-year-old from the Eastern Cape won the coveted title on Friday, much has been made about the fact that she wore her hair naturally for the pageant. She’s been praised for doing so by the public and celebrities alike.

    Zozibini Tunzi

“This day finally came! Natural African hair under that Miss SA crown and heading to the world stage. You are breathtaking!” wrote radio presenter Azania Mosaka on Twitter. While singer Lira tweeted,”Ooooh what a beauty! Goosebumps. Our newest #MissSA is rocking her natural hair”.

“I’m happy. I’m emotional. A South African beauty with short natural hair won the #MissSA2019 crown,” said actress Florence Masebe on Instagram. While not all social media users were complimentary about her hairstyle, things started to get heated when it was insinuated that it might have had something to do with her win.

It was pointed out that Tunzi entered Miss SA for the first time in 2017 with flowing faux locks and failed to progress past the semi finals. Yet now, with short natural hair, she clinched the crown.

    Zozibini Tunzi

Several Twitter users disagreed with this theory with one commenting “… you are basically reducing Zozibini’s success to just hair choice. Saying she won because she has short natural hair is bull”.

Another added, “People are annoying hey … her win became about black women’s hair as if she didn’t deserve it … they don’t realise how much they are taking away from her shine.”

As if preempting the fact that her hairstyle would be a major talking point should she win, Tunzi wrote an Instagram post about it a week before the pageant’s grand finale.

“Before going natural I was scared of not being beautiful because of the misconception I had of what beauty is, mainly because beauty was never presented to me as someone who has my kind of hair,” she said. As the new Miss SA she’s helping to change that, and teach the world the same “important lesson” that she learnt.

As Tunzi put it, “I learnt that … women are not one dimensional and therefore you cannot box their beauty. We all come in different shapes, sizes and shades, with natural hair and weaves. Regardless of what we choose, we are all fantastic beasts.

Sbahle Mpisane opens up about reclaiming herself one year after car crash

Friday marked one year since Sbahle Mpisane was involved in a car crash that nearly claimed her life and resulted in her spending months in hospital. Sbahle lost control of her car during the early hours of August 9, 2018 on Victoria Embankment in Durban. Paramedics had to use Jaws of Life to remove her from the wreckage.

And, even though its been a long and tough journey to recovery, Sbahle learnt to push herself to reclaim her life.

    Sbahle Mpisane

Taking to Instagram, Sbahle shared how suffering from amnesia after the accident almost made her forget that she’s an intellectual woman and made her question if could rise above her injuries.

“My traumatic injuries on both my feet made me question if I could steer myself in any direction I choose. None the less, a few understood and pushed me to additionally reclaim myself and relook at my directions.”

She added that not all pieces were together yet, however, in the end, they will be “cheek by jowl”. Giving others motivation Sbahle said, “Promise me you’ll always remember that you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think!

    Sbahle Mpisane

Sbahle also shared on Instagram Live that looking back on the day she graduated made her emotional.

She, however, added that things do turn out for the best for people who made the best out of the way things turned out. Just a few weeks ago, Sbahle celebrated taking her first few steps without crutches since the accident.

Sbahle explained on Instagram that it took her an hour to take those first three steps and that it was extremely painful, but she had promised her mom that she would do it for her. She said it was a case of mind over matter.

    Sbahle Mpisane

“Our body can withstand almost anything. It’s your mind that needs the convincing. For the past couple of months, without much success, I’ve been attempting to at least take one step. Yesterday my mum managed to make me take three steps, and it took a whole hour,” she added.

Celeste Ntuli: My thick skin helped me as a female comedian

In commemoration of Women’s Day, comedian and actress Celeste Ntuli has weighed in on being a woman in 2019. Celeste is known as a powerhouse in the comedy industry and will on Friday join several other comedians headlining The Kings and Queens of Comedy, The Women’s Day Edition.

    Celeste Ntuli

Talking to TshisaLIVE ahead of the show, Celeste opened up about her own experience with patriarchy in the industry and explained that she had developed a thick skin.
Growing up and being called names made me stronger as I came to realise that being called names didn’t faze me. I had to learn to either pick myself up or to allow people to put me down. It’s either you learn to love or hate yourself.

    Celeste Ntuli

Although she might be in a male-dominated industry, Celeste felt women could make people laugh too. There’s nothing wrong being identified as female. As I believe there is no difference between a male or female comedian. In fact, we women can make you laugh even harder!

She admitted that she doesn’t see challenges as a negative thing as she felt that she’s never faced such, only through observation of others. My life was designed in such a way that I don’t see the hurdles in my journey as challenges, but life lessons. As soon we women start looking at challenges that way, the sooner we’ll move up in this world.

    Celeste-Ntuli

Talking about The Kings and Queens of Comedy event, set to take place on August 9 at Emperors Palace, Celeste said fans can expect a lot of laughter and “sexiness”.

    Celeste-Ntuli

“The difference about this edition is that we don’t do them quite often, it’s just something special for the ladies. The show promises women who’ll be attending lots of laughter and sexiness, they should really come through to the show.

  • Bonang Matheba Begs Cassper Nyovest not to sue Her

Bonang Matheba Begs Cassper Nyovest not to sue Her

Bonang Matheba was shaking in her boots when she accidentally used Cassper Nyovest’s signature phrase, “Fill Up” in a tweet and Abuti saw it on his timeline. It was probably an innocent mistake on Queen B’s part but things kicked off when she took to Twitter to write, “Remember to fill up before midnight!”. The presenter was simply talking about the need to top up on fuel before the petrol prices increased at midnight, but not everybody took it this way.

     Cassper Nyovest

Cassper Nyovest’s fans suggested that she was looking for trouble by using the same phrase that the rapper has used to name his hotly followed series of concerts over the years, “Fill Up”. Just when Bonang thought she might have gotten away with it, Mufasa confirmed her worst fears: he had seen her obvious plagiarism of his not-trademarked-but-still-his concert name. Fearing a fight, Bonang begged him not to sue her:

It looked as if both megastars were about to lawyer up, until Cassper was able to settle it out of court. He found it in his heart to forgive Bonng because.

    Cassper-Nyovest

Okay, okay! We know they were joking all along, but Cassper Nyovest has proven that he doesn’t take use of the phrase “Fill Up” very lightly. Back in 2018 Cassper tried to call out Benny Mayengani for using the phrase for his own concert, Fill Up Giyani Stadium. Cassper, who had promoted Fill Up The Dome, Orlando, FNB and Moses Mabhida felt as if other artists were unfairly hopping onto his bandwagon.

    Bonang-Matheba

While many of us could agree that at face value, the Fill Up trend was very much a “Cassper thing” – legally he had no leg to stand on because he had not copyrighted the phrase which meant that Benny, and indeed Bonang, could go ahead and use “Fill Up” whenever and however they wanted. So even if Lebonza was not from Maftown, she would have been safe.

    Bonang-Matheba

As an aside, karma hit back in the long run because Benny Mayengani’s Fill Up Giyani Stadium went ahead, but the second time he tried to use the phrase, for Fill Up Peter Mokhaba, it turned out to be a complete disaster. Do you remember this?
