Miss South Africa Ndavi Nokeri will be representing the country at the 70th Miss Universe.

On Tuesday there was a farewell event organized for Ndavi Nokeri as she heads for Miss Universe.

Former Miss SA and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi hosted the event; she was delighted to MC to program.

“Today I got to put on my big sister shoes to host the farewell event of our beautiful Miss South Africa and my Queen sister @ndavi.nokerii, who will be leaving at the end of this month to represent us at Miss Universe. When I first met her I knew she was our Miss SA and she has somehow surpassed that great first impression and has evolved into an even more intelligent, kind, and gracious Queen. We’re extremely lucky to have you and can’t wait to share you with the Universe. Break a leg! We love you,” Zozi wrote.

Ndavi also shared a video clip from the event.

The 25-year-old public relations graduate from Cape Town walked away with the title as well as R3-million in prize money and sponsorships deals. The runner-up, Sasha-Lee Olivier, takes home R250 000 in cash Unlike last year, when a Miss World South Africa and a Miss Universe South Africa was crowned, it was unclear who would represent the country at the two pageants in 2019.

When one Twitter user asked for clarity on the matter, Zozibini replied: ” I will be going to Miss Universe, and Sasha-Lee will be going to Miss World. The Miss Universe organisation are yet to reveal the host nation for the 2019 pageant, but according to The South African, South Africa is among the possible host countries.

  • Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi’s natural crown sparks a hair-raising debate

Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi’s natural crown sparks a hair-raising debate

Here sits the crown, beautifully so on my kinky coarse hair. I hope I make South Africa proud,” said Zozibini Tunzi in her first official Instagram post as Miss SA 2019.

Since the 25-year-old from the Eastern Cape won the coveted title on Friday, much has been made about the fact that she wore her hair naturally for the pageant. She’s been praised for doing so by the public and celebrities alike.

    Zozibini Tunzi

“This day finally came! Natural African hair under that Miss SA crown and heading to the world stage. You are breathtaking!” wrote radio presenter Azania Mosaka on Twitter. While singer Lira tweeted,”Ooooh what a beauty! Goosebumps. Our newest #MissSA is rocking her natural hair”.

“I’m happy. I’m emotional. A South African beauty with short natural hair won the #MissSA2019 crown,” said actress Florence Masebe on Instagram. While not all social media users were complimentary about her hairstyle, things started to get heated when it was insinuated that it might have had something to do with her win.

It was pointed out that Tunzi entered Miss SA for the first time in 2017 with flowing faux locks and failed to progress past the semi finals. Yet now, with short natural hair, she clinched the crown.

Several Twitter users disagreed with this theory with one commenting “… you are basically reducing Zozibini’s success to just hair choice. Saying she won because she has short natural hair is bull”.

Another added, “People are annoying hey … her win became about black women’s hair as if she didn’t deserve it … they don’t realise how much they are taking away from her shine.”

As if preempting the fact that her hairstyle would be a major talking point should she win, Tunzi wrote an Instagram post about it a week before the pageant’s grand finale.

“Before going natural I was scared of not being beautiful because of the misconception I had of what beauty is, mainly because beauty was never presented to me as someone who has my kind of hair,” she said. As the new Miss SA she’s helping to change that, and teach the world the same “important lesson” that she learnt.

As Tunzi put it, “I learnt that … women are not one dimensional and therefore you cannot box their beauty. We all come in different shapes, sizes and shades, with natural hair and weaves. Regardless of what we choose, we are all fantastic beasts.

Zozibini Tunzi has won Miss South Africa but she can’t believe it!

Speaking after winning Miss SA crown 2019, the 25-year-old revealed that she didn’t expect to win.

“It actually hasn’t sunk in at the moment, I think I’ll believe it first thing tomorrow morning,” Zozibini said.

“You want to do good but then when it actually happens you come crashing and it’s overwhelming but it’s beautifully overwhelming.”

The beaut, who’s from the Eastern Cape, went on to say that she did not expect to win the Miss SA title.

“There were 15 other amazing girls. I just remember stepping out of the flight and meeting the first set of girls and I thought ‘Oh my goodness this is going to be a hectic year because every one of them was intelligent in their own right and I didn’t know that I would win’.”

Zozibini revealed that she is looking forward to meeting with different South African people and touching as many lives as possible.

“I hope to use this platform to spread positivity and do good.”

Her proud dad, Lungisa Tunzi (55), revealed that he’s stunned at his daughter’s achievement.

    Zozibini Tunzi

“I am absolutely speechless,” Mr Tunzi said. “It’s unbelievable. You know a rural boy like myself coming from the village of uTsolo in the Eastern Cape, having a child that is Miss South Africa is amazing.

“We want to put God first because we have been praying for this moment to come and now here it is.

“We are very, very proud of her and we give all the glory to God.”
