K-Beauty Giant Amorepacific Sees Profit Jump 727% in 2021

The South Korean company, a subsidiary of Amorepacific Group, reported a net profit of 180.9 billion won ($151.2 million) in 2021, a year-on-year rise of 727.7 per cent. Revenue grew 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 4.86 trillion won, according to a regulatory filing.

Amorepacific credited a 40 per cent surge in online sales as a major driver for growth in 2021.

The company, which owns K-Beauty brands such as Amorepacific, Sulwhasoo, Leneige, Mamonde, Innisfree and Etude, narrowed losses in its fourth quarter to 54.4 billion won, compared to 58.9 billion won in the same quarter of 2020.

China, which accounts for 70 per cent of Amorepacific’s Asian sales outside Korea, saw revenue drop 10 per cent, which the company attributed to the closure of many of its Innisfree brand stores in the country.

  • 2022 marks the return of the high heel

2022 marks the return of the high heel

The pandemic put some of our most beloved fashion trends in hibernation while countries spanning the globe underwent strict lockdowns. Zoom calls took over board room meetings and the House Party app replaced social gatherings for months, forcing functionality, comfort and all forms of stripped-down, fashion, beauty and lifestyle trends to rise up the ranks of popularity. In essence, our previously ostentatious ways of existing were humbled in a bid to fit in with the “new normal”.

But, not any longer. In the new year, curfews are lifting – as are travel bans – and clubs, restaurants and businesses of all kinds are beginning to thrive once more. And, as a result, we’re looking to dress for the occasion. Whether you’re donning a pair of boyfriend jeans for something casual or a little black dress for a grand affair, one thing’s for sure, we’ll be finishing off every outfit with a pair of heels to complete the look.

Returning with a vengeance, high heels of the moment take on abstract and innovative designs with more edge, colour and creativity than we’ve seen in recent years.

Brushing off the comfort shoe trend of lockdown, high heels were all over the Spring/Summer 2022 runways in Milan and Paris.

From Gianvito Rossi’s platform mules with plexi uppers to Saint Laurent’s PVC stilettos — in all their toe-squishing splendour — these designs serve as an indicator of what’s next in fashion.

Of course, cushy and comfortable shoes will always have a place in the fashion space, with white sneakers remaining a wardrobe staple that traverses various seasons and trends. However, the likes of the mercifully comfortable Crocs, arch-supporting Birkenstocks and fleece-lined Ugg boots won’t necessarily outlast these classics. But for now, we’re embracing high heels – the louder, more over-the-top and whimsical, the better.

5 styles of heels we’re loving in 2022:

    Unique heels

From Fendi and Versace’s maximalist collaboration featuring seemingly invisible heels to Loewe’s hyper realistic shoes with soles resting on what appears to be ordinary objects like bars of soap and birthday candles – these heels are taking quirky to new heights. If you’re looking for a way to express yourself and add some personality to your outfits, a stand-out pair of heels is the ideal accompaniment.

    Vibrant orange

Dopamine dressing is a trend that’s emerging in the post lockdown era of fashion. It involves dressing in bold patterns and bright colours, mixing and matching contrasting shades for a colour-blocking effect to evoke feelings of happiness. Bright colours were abundant at fashion shows for the season ahead, with orange being the most noticeable. Louis Vuitton, Prabal Gurung and more high-end designers had their models sporting luminous peachy hues for an extra fun pop of colour.

Amina Muaddi’s clear, Cinderella-style Begum heels had people frothing at the mouth back in 2019 when model Kendall Jenner wore them. As the “it” designer of the moment, anything this Italian designer creates is bound to lay the foundation for some of the next season of trends. From crystal buckles to metallic ribbons, for 2022, it’s the jewel-encrusted embellishments that adorn every one of her stylish creations that have people talking. So fun and glitzy, they are the ideal party shoe for upgrading any outfit.

People are just loving boots for every occasion and season, whether it is in the hot summer months, breezy spring or autumn and winter. They pair effortlessly with everything from tights and knit sweaters, to mini skirts and stockings, maxi dresses, jeans and more. Popular styles for the year are chunky platforms with lug soles and block heels for something more robust and durable. However, sexy stilettos that zip up at the thigh are also having their moment. In a range of prints, from animal to 70s florals, and loud, funky colours, in 2022, the heeled boot is all about making a statement.

Teeny, tiny micro heels are back in a big way. The trend is perfect for easing back into heel-wearing after practically two years of not going out or having an occasion to dress up for. These dainty kitten-esque high heels have been seen in a range of styles from mules to almond-toes with an ankle strap and even sling-backs. They are great for elevating an outfit, without too much distraction. However, that’s not to say they aren’t as bold as your average stiletto. In vibrant shades, luxurious materials (suede, velvet, silk and leather), they can be just as glamorous.

  • Neymar Jr to drop new fragrance with Diesel

Neymar Jr to drop new fragrance with Diesel

Diesel Fragrances has teamed up with Brazilian football star Neymar Jr and are set to drop a new fragrance in May next year. The collaboration reflects Diesel Fragrances’ vision of modern masculinity and bravery. It’s also a testimony to Neymar Jr.’s incredible journey, from his childhood days playing football in the poor neighborhood of Jardim Glória, at Praia Grande, to his rise to global fame.

If there’s one person who knows what it takes to make it, it’s Neymar Jr. You are the face of Spirit of the Brave. What does the word “bravery” mean to you?

I consider myself “courageous”. I wake up every day of my life thinking about winning, about fighting a good fight. Sometimes the adversities are many, the life of a professional athlete at my level is filled with obstacles. But I don’t give up, I know what I can achieve and I help my teammates. It’s like that in my personal life as well. I cannot give up, there are many people rooting for me and that drives me on.

    Neymar Jr

You were quite involved in the creation of the new fragrance. How did you work with Diesel Fragrance on this project? I became very excited with the project since the first time they showed it to me. I took part in the most important decisions, mainly the choice of fragrance since it had to be related to what I like. And it was all very well done, I am happy and I hope to make other people happy with the final product.

Did you have an idea what you wanted Spirit of the Brave to smell like?

I did not know exactly what, but I knew it had to do with me. It had to be a daring fragrance…[laughter] I wanted a fragrance that is both fresh and elegant, to give me energy and confidence in every moment of my life.

Are there some specific aromas that make you feel good? That bring you specific memories? Some aromas that take you back to your childhood in Brazil?

The smell of a plate with rice, beans, beef and fried potatoes … [laughter]. That really moves me, it takes me back to Brazil, a meal with the family…

The packaging of the fragrance is black and gold. What does that convey to you? Why did you select this association?
Because it conveys strength and sophistication. Confidence and bravery.

    Neymar Jr

You have a sense of style and fashion. Do you think it is important to stand out?

I love fashion. I think it is important to always be well dressed. The way we dress says a lot about who we are. Standing out is a consequence.

Do you have a ritual before you go out on the field?

Before every game I speak with my father and we pray together. We have been doing this since the start of my career, while I was still in the minor leagues. And I listen to a lot of music! How important are the fans to you? What do you think they expect from you? Can you learn something from them? How to you maintain contact with them?

The fans are very important to me. They give me strength, confidence, they sustain me with their love so that I can maintain my will to win. The way I express myself on the social networks is one way of maintaining contact with them. They are always very curious to know everything that happens in my life on and off the field. But the best form of contact I maintain with them is by scoring a goal or winning a title. There’s a lot of energy involved! The full campaign, starring Neymar Jr. in a playful mood, will debut on May 19.

  • First look at the new Miss South Africa crown #MissSA2019

First look at the new Miss South Africa crown #MissSA2019

The first look at the new Miss South Africa crown. It weighs more than half a kilogram and is studded with 2 586 sparkling zirconia stones.

Created through cutting-edge technology, the crown took about 192 hours to manufacture. But best of all is the Ndebele pattern at its core – a dazzling nod to the theme of this year’s Miss South Africa pageant: celebrating the beauty and diversity of African women.

The brand-new Miss South Africa crown has been named Ubuhle Bethungo Lenkosazana, which means “beauty of the rainbow” in isiZulu and will be worn by this year’s winner. Buhle was created by American Swiss in collaboration with world-renowned jewellery designer Johan Louw of Uwe Koetter jewellers.

The Ndebele pattern on the crown was chosen because it’s almost universally recognised as being South African,” says Zimbini Peffer, head of marketing at American Swiss. “This crown first and foremost celebrates the importance of women in society as well as their contribution to the nation. The name was chosen to celebrate the cultural diversity in the pageant and the country.

“The colours are beautiful and vibrant in their own right, just like all the women who are participating in this year’s contest.” The vision and idea behind the crown were decided in a matter of hours, but the actual design and manufacturing took plenty of time. The process began by using computer-aided design (CAD) to visualise the crown and then to produce a template.

“It included designing the crown on a computer program and creating an on scale production-ready item that can be 3D-printed, moulded and manufactured. The CAD designing of jewellery is complex, with each detail carefully translated from the original design and created digitally,” Johan says.

Moving upward from the colourful foundation provided by tåhe Ndebele pattern are pavé cubic zirconia topped by larger prong-mounted cubic zirconia heads. These are reminiscent of shooting stars, Zimbini explains – because a shooting star is what Miss South Africa will be. Since the crown needed so many stones, sorting of the zirconia took about 36 hours to complete and the setting process took another 64 hours. It was quite a job, Johan says, but it was 100% worth it.

Being chosen as the winner of the South African pageant isn’t only an honour but a responsibility as Miss SA will be an ambassador for our country. “I, therefore, wanted to create something that’s instantly recognisable as South African.”

The crown, which weighs 517g, will be placed on the head of the winner on the big night by outgoing Miss SA Tamaryn Green, and then only make an appearance at special events. In between, Buhle will be locked away for safekeeping.

The previous Miss SA crown, Enhle, was first worn by Ntandoyenkosi Kunene-Mthethwa, Miss South Africa 2016, and used for the following two years. This year, with the change in the direction of the pageant being inclusive of a diverse range of contestants, it was only apt to change the crown too.

“We’re delighted with Buhle,” Miss SA organiser Stephanie Weil says. “Like her name and the first woman who’ll wear her, she’s a real showstopper.”
