Five tips for radiant beach-ready skin

Summer is generally a time for lazy beach days, sun-kissed skin (without the burn) and lovely long evenings enjoying good food and wine.

Sadly, not all of those things are good for your skin. Amanda du-Pont, founder of skincare line Lelive, says that in the summer, hot temperatures, high humidity, extended sun exposure, and a change in diet could cause even normal skin to behave differently.

To make matters worse, taking a refreshing swim in the pool or just unwinding in a cool room further contributes to skin dryness.

“Caring for your skin and changing your regime as we move through the seasons should be a priority,” Du-Pont says. Du-Pont has five simple, practical, and efficient tips for maintaining flawless skin as summer progresses.

    1. Cleanse
The best summer days are those that conclude with sweaty faces, tangled hair, and big smiles. Just remember to wash off the day’s adventures! In the evening, wash your face properly with a cleanser to remove all traces of SPF, sweat, and sea salt. Be thorough but gentle, especially if the heat has made your skin feel sensitive.
Tip: Since the skin produces oil and sebum throughout the day, you should wash your face in the morning and at night.

    2. Moisturise
During the summer, people frequently skip this step, especially those with oily skin. After cleansing, your skin needs to be moisturised. The skin’s outer layer, which is vulnerable to damage from UV radiation, dangerous contaminants, and chemicals, is shielded by moisturiser. The ideal moisturizer is one with an SPF.

    3. Use antioxidant-containing serums
Applying serum is the one step in a daily skincare regimen that should not be skipped. The best face serums target a variety of skin issues at once and offer a highly concentrated, strong dose of active ingredients to the skin. Serums have the ability to transport smaller molecules deep within the skin, where they are most effective, whether they be antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, peptides, botanical agents, or any other number of components.

    4. Apply Sunscreen
Whenever you are outside in the sun, bring sunscreen. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to your face before going outside, particularly if you are wearing short sleeves and have tied your hair up, your hands and necks. Dermatologists and other professionals cannot stress enough how crucial broad-spectrum sunscreen is. Apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30, paying extra attention to your hands, feet, ears, and lips.
Top Tip: Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours.

    5. Your summer wardrobe
Whether you have oily skin or dry skin in the summer, denims, lace, velvet, and polyester should all be avoided. These materials could make you feel irritated, itchy, or make you sweat more. Embrace silks, cottons, and linens instead. These materials allow your skin to breathe, as necessary.

In addition to the changes to your skincare line-up, du-Pont says that finding brands that support locally sourced ingredients with limited use of plastics will serve your skin better in the long run. “There are so many wonderful South African created products on the market boasting incredible local ingredients that do wonders for the skin.”

Bonus Tip: The ideal summer skincare regimen begins internally so be sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Your body stays hydrated and revitalized with water, which also helps to sustain the suppleness of your skin. People who consume a lot of water are less likely to develop scars, wrinkles, or soft lines, and they won’t age as quickly as people who consume less water.

  • The easiest six male grooming tips for the holiday season

The easiest six male grooming tips for the holiday season

The holidays are a time to relax and unwind. But, that doesn’t mean you skimp on your daily grooming routine. Hotter temperatures usually mean you sweat more which can leave you exposed to bacteria, while excessive sun exposure can lead to dry skin and even drier hair.
With the right products and a slightly adapted grooming routine, you can feel your best and look irresistible this holiday season.

Here’s how, courtesy of Clubman Pinaud.

    Cleanse regularly
One of the most important steps in your summer routine is to cleanse your skin and beard thoroughly twice a day. Our skin gets sweaty in the heat, and sweat can get trapped in your beard, resulting in skin breakouts and bad odour. Gently massage your facial cleanser all over your skin and beard, and rinse thoroughly before applying a moisturising product.
    Moisturise your facial hair
The warm weather and constant sun exposure can lead to dry facial hair, so it’s important to restore moisture by applying a nourishing balm every day.
    Shave with an oil
Whether you’re removing all your facial hair, or just shaping your beard and moustache, we recommend using a shave oil this summer. An oil formula allows for more precise shaving as you can see better, and it provides the skin with a protective barrier to help avoid nicks and cuts.
    Apply an after-shave product
If you’re going for a clean-shaven look this summer, you’ll probably shave regularly. To avoid irritation, redness, itching and dry skin, be sure to apply a good quality after-shave product to your skin after every shave.
    Bumps, be gone!
No matter how carefully you shave, razor bumps can happen to anyone. Razor bumps take shape in the form of clusters of small, red, or dark bumps around hair follicles. The surrounding skin can also be red or inflamed. If you’re prone to razor bumps, you are likely to be prone to developing ingrown hairs too, which are not only painful but can lead to long-term scarring.
Don’t forget to treat your skin
Our skin is oilier during summer, and if not removed properly, the excess oil can clog pores, leading to breakouts and blackheads. Dissolve surface oils and keep your skin’s oil production under control with a weekly mask.

  • Here is why you need a scalp serum

Here is why you need a scalp serum

If you have great hair, even then you need hair products to maintain them. This is why choosing the correct goods to use during this season is crucial. Scalp serums are currently one of the most popular trends because of their capacity to effectively address hair issues from the inside out.

You may get nourished and healthier hair by incorporating a scalp serum into your hair care routine without having to worry about product accumulation.

A concentrated formulation, in every bottle

The fact that serums boast a concentrated formulation of necessary chemicals, whether they are for the skin or the scalp, is one of their distinguishing characteristics. Typically, these compounds are made to address particular scalp issues, including as dryness, oiliness, dandruff, or limp hair. Science-based formulations typically go through a lengthy R&D process to be able to create medicines that are not only formulated with these concerns in mind, but also have the potential to produce noticeable improvements over time.

Getting to work, right at the root

One of the most important components that is sometimes disregarded when dealing with haircare issues is the roots. Hair care issues frequently begin at the roots before moving down to your tresses. For instance, there is a significant probability that the remainder of your hair may feel dryness if your roots are experiencing dryness. Scalp serums are applied directly at the roots, as their name suggests, and seek to nourish this area of your hair initially. Giving your roots the food they require will help your roots grow into healthier strands, which will affect the way your hair looks as well.

Gives you the gloss, without the added product

Many different factors can contribute to dry, sparsely textured hair, with scalp problems being one of the primary culprits. In order to maintain their hair in place and add shine over the holiday season, people who want to sport a new hairstyle frequently use creams and gels. However, using a lot of product to maintain the hair glossy can cause buildup, which makes the hair even more dry and damaged. With the aid of a scalp serum, you may improve the health of your hair and give it a natural shine without the need for extra cosmetics.

Healthy hair, so people stop and stare

Who doesn’t appreciate having better hair, particularly during the holidays? It’s crucial to have healthier hair that can survive the damage you are going to cause if you want to present your best hair and try out different looks for your soirees. It is usually advisable to apply a scalp serum following a hair wash to give your hair the love it needs, especially if you want to use heat, colour your hair, or use a considerable amount of product in it.

Bid adieu to dandruff for good

One of the most common scalp problems is dandruff, which is more common in the winter because of the dryness of the air and the lower temperatures. When the temperature drops, the scalp begins to dry out, which causes a layer of dead skin cells to shed. Similar to dandruff, excessive oil production on the scalp can cause bothersome dandruff that frequently requires immediate attention. Dandruff removal is one of the main purposes of scalp serums, and frequent usage of these products can provide a long-term fix for your hair issues.

Despite being a novel product idea, scalp serums have a lot to offer that traditional hair care products might not be able to, particularly because they address problems at their source. Utilizing a high-quality scalp serum that has been created after careful research and development is crucial and can drastically change the look of your hair with regular application!

  • A guide to protecting your skin from pollution

A guide to protecting your skin from pollution

If you live in a city, you are probably aware of the rising pollution levels. Exposure to high levels of air pollutants for an extended period or repeatedly may harm your skin.

As cities are engulfed in smog and their air quality approaches hazardous levels, the pollutants will affect your skin if appropriate care is not taken.
To rescue your skin from harsh pollutants, a team of sensitive skin experts from Cetaphil shares a few tips to ensure our skin doesn’t lose its nourishment.

    1. Air purifier: Invest in a good air purifier. Since most allergies stem from dust, a good quality air purifier is ideal to help clean the home environment and remove dust and other harmful particles.

    2. Practice good hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly after every task and before touching your skin. Change your clothes at least twice a day and ensure that you bath regularly to remove all the pollutants from your skin.

    3. Keep the skin nourished: Your skin may suffer because of increased pollution and seasonal changes, making it more sensitive and prone to irritation and allergies.

People with sensitive skin may have a thinner or weakened skin moisture barrier, which allows irritants to penetrate and hydration to escape. Make sure your skin is well-nourished and moisturised to improve the resilience of sensitive skin.

While stepping outdoors, always carry a moisturiser, like Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, which can soothe irritated skin and provide intense moisture.

    4. Limit outdoor time: Tracking air quality ensures that you can better manage your outdoor time. Go for a walk in the morning when the air is fresh ,and plan your day and tasks to avoid making multiple trips outside.

In addition, don’t forget to apply sunscreen as the harsh rays of the sun, paired with the hazardous air quality, can irritate your skin more. This could also lead to stinging and itching.

    5. Look for hypo-allergenic products: It is essential to use hypo-allergenic products, especially if you have sensitive skin, in this harsh climate. Using strong products on the skin when it is irritated may cause more harm than good.

Look for ingredients like Niacinamide, which helps tackle inflammation and regulate the oil in your skin

Everything You Need to Know about Eyelash Extensions

Eyelashes are one of the most subtle yet powerful facial features. They draw attention to your eyes, helping you to communicate without saying a word.

Eyelash extensions were designed to enhance your eyes by lengthening and thickening eyelashes. There are many forms of extensions which can create the desired look a client is wanting. There are single strands (Synthetic, mink and silk) which are perfectly curled and designed to mimic a client’s natural lash. Eyelash extensions were designed to make an eye appear fuller and more luscious but most importantly to be comfortable and non-invasive for everyday wear.

Eyelash extensions are ideal for everyday wear as well as special occasions.

While it’s true that eyelash extensions require less maintenance than wearing mascara or fake eyelashes every day, they’re still not really a get-and-forget kinda thing, either.

To find out how to prep before your appointment, what the proper aftercare is, and all the other important lash facts, we turned to Phillips and other lash experts for their insights.

A consultation will also help you determine what to choose for material (most common are silk and faux mink; silk is a bit shinier and pops more, whereas mink is most fluttery and natural), length, and curl type (J is the slightest curve but ends up looking longer; C and D are the most flipped up), as well as how many lashes should be applied.

A great lash artist will also mix lengths to give lashes a naturally wispy vibe, Shirai says. “At Blinkbar we use a minimum of four different lengths for every style we offer.”

  • 7 beauty tips every woman needs to know!

7 beauty tips every woman needs to know!

20-something is the best time to kick-start a skincare regime. It is an age where you don’t hesitate to experiment, when you try the latest looks and when you learn more about your personal likes and dislikes. It is also the time when the acne problems of teenage years usually subside, the skin’s smoothness and complexion are at their prime.

Keeping all this in mind, you must take care of your skin to retain its original health and glow – and the tips involved also vary for different age groups. Here is a comprehensive list of what your ideal skincare guide should look like:

    1. Start with proper Cleansing

Of all the beauty tips for your face, the first and foremost is to cleanse your face every time you are back home. Cleansing involves gently wiping off all the makeup, sunscreen, dirt and pollution that your face has been exposed to. Any smooth, milky cleanser will be a great choice for all skin types. Use warm water to wash your face, then apply some cleanser and rub it over your face in circular motions. Rinse properly again with warm water after a few minutes and pat dry your face with a towel.

    2. Moisturise your skin, always

Washing or cleaning often leaves the face dry and scratchy. Hence, the next most important thing you must do for your skin is to keep it hydrated. You can use an oil-free moisturizer as it is great for both oily and dry skin types. Keeping your skin hydrated at all times is one of the most important beauty tips for dodging those approaching fine lines and wrinkles.

    3. Don’t forget the sunscreen

Whether the sun is overhead or not, applying sunscreen is an essential skincare routine. The damage can prove to be very harmful to the health of your skin. Hence, use only SPF protected creams and makeup products. In addition to this, girls, avoid sun exposure as much as you can!

    4. Remember to Exfoliate

Exfoliation is essential to purge your skin of all the dead cells and blackheads. Do it only once or twice a week for smooth, supple skin – the kind every girl pines for! You can book UrbanClap’s salon services at home to get this treatment done by experts.

    5. Include a lot of antioxidants in your diet!

Antioxidants are great for your skin as they tie down the production of free radicals, prevent ageing, dark spots, lines and save you from the harmful effects of pollution and UV rays. You must munch on a lot of antioxidants such as berries, spinach, broccoli, have lots of freshwater fish and drink green tea. Nowadays markets too are flooded with skincare products that have antioxidants as an ingredient. Now you know better what to buy on your next grocery shopping!

    6. Protect the area surrounding your eyes

Because the skin around your eyes is very delicate you must take care of it with the equivalent caution as you do for the rest of your face. This part is very easily prone to wrinkle lines, a clear hint of the aging process. Hence, to plump up the skin around your eyes, start using eye creams in your mid-twenties. They not only prevent puffiness but also make your eyes look younger.

    7. Never sleep with makeup on

Yes, it’s the most tiresome job to come back home from a party or dance night, all weary and exhausted and sit down to remove all your makeup. But sleeping with all those layers of makeup on your face can do more damage than you can even think of. It leads to blocking of pores and subsequently bad breakouts. Therefore, an important beauty tip here is to always use a cleanser or a makeup remover of a good brand to remove the makeup before you go to sleep, no matter how worn out you feel.

Following this simple 7 step routine will save you from feeling guilty in your 30s. And though the skincare routine sounds much like a splurge, we have provided you with the 7 most affordable and convenient ways of keeping your skin gleaming and radiant. Enjoy your 20s and prep effortlessly for an even more enjoyable 30s.

  • Common habits that can make acne scars worse

Common habits that can make acne scars worse

Acne itself can be immensely annoying. Unfortunately, it leaves unwanted marks and scars that can last a long time. Not only are acne scars more difficult to treat than acne, but they can also get worse due to our everyday habits.

To help you avoid this situation, we have listed out some common habits that you need to stop right away.

    1. Popping your pimples to treat them quickly
Popping a pimple does more harm than good because this external manipulation increases the risk of discoloration and scarring. Also, avoid scratching or rubbing your acne and its blemishes. This transfers the bacteria from your hands to your face and leads to inflammation. Instead of scratching acne, put a bit of spot treatment on the blemish and patiently wait for it to heal.

    2. Covering up your acne blemishes with heavy makeup
Covering your blemishes with a lot of foundation and concealer can help you hide them, but this is not a long-term solution. In fact, this habit can irritate the skin and make acne scars worse. The correct way of dealing with acne scars is spot treatments and patience. However, if you absolutely need to use makeup, choose beauty products that are oil-free and non-comedogenic.

    3. Trying a new acne treatment every week
When people don’t see quick results from their acne treatments, usually they turn toward another treatment within a week. This impatient approach can irritate your skin to cause breakouts. Give an acne treatment time to work. Wait for at least six to eight weeks before trying another product. Complete clearing generally takes 3-4 months, so being patient is the key to success here.

    4. Sharing your makeup, brushes and other tools
Sharing is a good thing but when it comes to makeup and the tools that go along with it, it is a complete no-no. No matter how clean your products are, sharing them leads to transfer of acne-causing bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. Also, make sure you clean your makeup tools regularly as the products sitting on them gather bacteria over time.

  • Four beauty decisions you need to make this year

Four beauty decisions you need to make this year

There is no better time than the New Year to break your terrible beauty habits; a new Year, a new set of beauty habits!

However, 2022 is not just about tossing out old mascaras and promising to visit the hairdresser more often; it is also about making positive changes that overhaul your whole skincare routine.

Here are four important beauty resolutions you must make in 2022

    1. Wear sunscreen daily

It is critical to remember to apply sunscreen every day of 2022… and beyond. Otherwise, you could be putting your skin at risk.

Sun damage and skin cancer are caused by ultraviolet radiation, which are always present. Wearing sunscreen every day can help you avoid years of sun damage, delaying the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Although the melanin in your skin protects you from sunburns if you have a darker complexion, you must still protect your skin from damaging ultraviolet radiation.

People with fair skin are more likely to get skin cancer as a result of sun exposure, but those with darker complexion are more likely to develop more dangerous types of skin cancer. As a result, everyone, regardless of skin tone, should use sunscreen every day.

    2. Throw out expired products

Do you have dirty make-up brushes, empty bottles, and expired foundations in your beauty drawer? Make a resolution to clear it all up in the new year, and make it a regular habit.

A dirty beauty drawer can be a subtle source of stress. Our surroundings, according to Psychology Today, can have a big impact on our mood and behaviour. In brief, clutter might have negative consequences such as increased anxiety or difficulty concentrating.

Additionally, dirty make-up and skincare items may harbour harmful microorganisms. If you do not dispose of expired products and empty bottles and clean up your make-up tools, the germs might linger and contaminate other products – and eventually, your skin.

    3. Wash make-up brushes regularly

Cleaning make-up brushes and beauty blenders can be tedious. But just like going to the gym, you will be glad you did it!

There is nothing as satisfying as when you sit down with your sparkling clean set of brushes the next day to do your make-up. And just like working out, cleaning your make-up brushes pays off in the long run.

Dirty brushes can be disastrous on your skin. When your make-up brush touches your skin, it comes off with oil, dust, dead skin cells, and bacteria – and the next time you use the same dirty brush on your face, new breakouts and blemishes appear on your otherwise flawless skin.

    4. Try something new

How adventurous are you when it comes to your skincare and beauty routines? While having tried and trusted products and routines is admirable, make a resolution to have fun with your beauty care in 2022. Instead of being stuck in a beauty rut, be bold and daring.

Every now and then, go out of your way to try something new, even if it is not necessarily ‘you’. How about a new shade of lipstick? Some new nail art? A hair colour that you have never tried before? You won’t know how something looks on you if you do not try.

  • Here’s what you should and shouldn’t have in your cosmetic bag

Here’s what you should and shouldn’t have in your cosmetic bag

New year, new me. Out with old, in with new.

As we step into the new year with renewed energy to start afresh it’s the perfect time reassess all aspects of our daily lives.

After silly season many people are looking to the oh so popular “January detox” mission to get into the “new me” train.

While you’re on the whole “out with old” drive, why don’t you have a look into your cosmetic bag and access your collection of make-up? There’s no doubt that you will find a few goodies in there that should be in the trash bin.

Many of us have the tendency to hold onto old products not knowing that it’s not good for us.

Yes I’m talking about the shimmering eyeshadow pallet you bought back in 2002 and the dried out pink lipstick you so rarely use but simply cannot throw out because you paid R300 for it.

This should help you determine whether your products have reached their expiry date and it’s time to be trashed.

Here’s a look at the top three most commonly used make-up products.

    Liquid foundation

The general rule is that throw it out after six months. Whether you’re using your fingers, brushes or sponges, you are touching the opening every time you use it and unless you’re a complete germophobe, whatever it is that your applying it with isn’t 100% clean. If your foundation starts to separate, thickens or starts to smell different, it’s time to let it go.

    Lipstick

Sorry to break it to you ladies, but your beloved lipstick shouldn’t be taking up space in your bag for more than a year. Had a cold sore recently? Get rid of that lipstick immediately! Has it dried out or become goopy, it’s time to let it go.

    Mascara

If there’s one product that you should be replacing most frequently, it’s mascara. You shouldn’t be using the same one for more than three months. No mascara is worth risking an eye infection. Never share your mascara and if it starts to smell funny or dry out, get rid of it.

Here’s a quick guide to what products have to be trashed when:

Liquid Foundation – After six months to 1 year

Cream Makeup – After six months to 1 year

    Lipstick – After 1 year

Powder Makeup – After 2 years

Eyeliner – After three months (liquid); After 2 years (pencil)

    Mascara – After three months

Face moisturiser – After six months (tub); after 1 year (pump)

    Sunscreen – After 1 year

Nail polish – After 1 year

    Perfume – After 8 to 10 years

Beauty care routines you should try in 2022

At the end of every year, many people take time to think about the milestones they have been able to achieve so far and some of the steps they can take to create a positive change.

By the time the new year is starting, there are those goals that we usually have at the back of our minds to keep the momentum going.

Since were almost jumping into 2022, why not consider trying out these beauty care ideas that actually been proven to be very effective:

    Try Simple old-school routines
In these modern times, we can appreciate the many improvements that have been made in the beauty industry. There are some routines and products that didn’t exist in the past and now we get to enjoy their full benefits.

All this is wonderful but what if we’re missing out on some of the best regimens and products from the past? Things were much simple back then and maybe that’s exactly what you need.

It’s possible that a bad diet is the underlying reason why you barely experience any breakthroughs with your usual hair and skin care regimen.

A good diet could be your ultimate beauty secret.

Beauty goes deeper than a good self-care regimen. It has a lot to do with how you’re feeling and how you cope with issues like stress.
