  • What to expect from 2nd instalment of M-Net’s ‘Strangers You Know’

What to expect from 2nd instalment of M-Net’s ‘Strangers You Know’

Homegrown true crime docu-series have become a firm favourite with Mzansi.

And given the high crime rate in the country, there’s plenty of material to work from.

Last year, M-Net’s “Strangers You Know” as well as Showmax’s “Devilsdorp” got viewers talking.

The latter was a disturbing look at faith manifesting in unholy actions by Cecilia Steyn and members of her Electus per Deus (Chosen by God) cult. Gosh, the series on the Krugersdorp Killings of 11 people between 2012 – 2016, still gives me chills.

And M-Net’s “Strangers You Know” was also an unsettling watch as it looked at real-life cases that not only grabbed headlines but left the nation reeling in horror.

Although crime doesn’t raise eyebrows as it used to for South Africans, the ones featured in this series managed to get a reaction from a desensitised nation.

As such, season two of “Strangers You Know” now debuts on M-Net this Sunday. And the four cases featured will throw viewers for a loop, especially when you realise that the victims died at the hands of people they trusted.

These dark and depraved killers show no remorse whatsoever while loved ones help piece together the events that they recall while revisiting death of someone close to them.

Each episode also features insight from the lead investigators, prosecutors as well as forensic pathologists.

Chwayitisa Futshane, who is the creator, producer and executive producer of the true-crime docuseries, commented: “In a country such as ours, where violence especially against women, is so rife, these are some of the stories that need to be told. In season 2, the series really gets to grips with some of these crimes and if nothing else, our viewers will be reminded that sometimes the most brutal killers, are the strangers we know.”

Below is a rundown of the shocking cases tackled over the coming weeks:

    Karabo Mokoena

She thought she found the man of her dreams when she started dating Forex trader Sandile Mantsoe. He appeared to be successful, intelligent and grounded in his spirituality.

But when Karabo goes missing, her friends and family try to track her down at the last place she was seen.

It soon becomes evident that Sandile is not the Prince Charming Karabo had first envisioned. Airs this Sunday.

    Jayde Panayiotou

In Gqebera circles, Jayde and Christopher were a match made in heaven. Jayde was a fun, well-loved teacher and Christopher was the businessman with a plan.

But their lives are ripped apart when Jayde’s body is found in a field outside of town.

While Christopher and his family mourn their profound loss, police set up a sting operation and a shocking discovery is made. Airs on January 16.

    Anene Booysen

A despicable act of savagery ends the life of Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen.

After the 17-year-old is found beaten and almost naked on a construction site by a security guard, the public was baying for blood.

With her dying words, Anene whispers the name of her killer to her mother.

What appears to be an open-and-shut case actually raises more questions about the police investigation and, most importantly, whether the right man is in prison.

    Henri van Breda

South Africans were shaken when the picture-perfect Van Breda family were brutally attacked in their Stellenbosch home by an axe-wielding intruder.

While the massacre grabbed international headlines, the police started paying close attention to someone inside the home.

The police slowly piece together the events of that day and a heart-breaking betrayal is revealed.

“Strangers You Know” 2 airs on M-Net, DStv channel 101, on Sundays at 8pm.

’Did Michael Jackson speak Setswana?’, asks Trevor Noah

Many people can attest to this. You hear a song, it hits the right spot and before long, you start singing along, years on, you realise that you’ve been misquoting the lyrics all along. Feeling embarrassed? Don’t.

We are all guilty of mishearing the lyrics and creating our own. During the recent throwback episodes of The Daily Show, actor and comedian Trevor Noah shared the South African version of Michael Jackson’s popular classic Don’t stop ’til you get enough, which includes some parts of the song been sung in Setswana.

“In South Africa, we didn’t know what he was saying … so we thought he was signing in Setswana,” says Trevor, referring to Michael Jackson’s 1979 hit single Don’t stop ’til you get enough.

“So when we get to that part (chorus) we will go … ke bao, ka dibotsotso, tjelete e fedile … which loosely translates to fashionistas looking dapper in their expensive jeans, but they have no money (because they probably used it all, buying lavish gear).

Trevor said many fans particularly in South Africa were convinced that the King of Pop could sing in African languages too.

“(Until) someone said, ‘that’s not what he’s saying’ and I was like, ‘no, you got it wrong,”’ Trevor said.

Trevor’s comments about the song sparked a humorous conversation on social media, with fans sharing their own version of the popular hit track.

“SO TRUE @trevornoah 🤣🤣🤣 I so remember and was so shocked and disappointed to learn the lyrics weren’t in MY language and weren’t as I had sung them all that time!! 🤣🤣🤣 You just took me back!” said Shadi M on Instagram.

Another user Gisselle said: “It’s funny bc we Congolese ppl thought he was speaking Lingala 🤣”

“Oh my gosh, this is so true. For the longest, my cousin convinced me that Michael Jackson was speaking a Ghanaian dialect and so I will belt it out in that dialect with confidence. Hmm, hmm,” said Aba Odooma.

“Am from Kenya and we thought he was singing in Kikuyu too which is my mother tongue. 😂,” said Faith Ruru.

“We thought it was speaking Ewe in Togo😂😂. Indeed MJ was the Universal Man,” Lean said.

  • Andile’s baby mama Sithelo Shozi returns to Instagram after brief hiatus

Andile’s baby mama Sithelo Shozi returns to Instagram after brief hiatus

Local DJ Sithelo Shozi has returned to Instagram after a brief hiatus following the surprise wedding of Andile Mpisane.

Shozi is known to be a regular on the photo-sharing app, but her presence on the platform became irregular after the father of her two children – Flo and Coco, went on one knee to somebody else.

The Royal AM soccer boss sent shockwaves across Mzansi with his engagement and wedding to Tamia Louw.

Shozi, during the frenzy that the wedding had created, was as quiet as a church mouse on social media as the public weighed in.

Social media users had plenty to say about the entanglement that had unfolded.

Shozi made her social media return in the new year by sharing pictures of her New Year’s eve celebrations.

The DJ shared a series of snaps that showed off the fun night she had. In her caption, she wrote, “…living for the nights that I can’t remember with the people that I won’t forget ✨”

Her followers were delighted that she had finally returned to the social media streets as a form of proof of life was needed after all the drama.

One follower, @skye.mkhize, commented that they had missed Shozi and were happy and excited to see her on social media.

The follower was not alone as there are several other comments welcoming the “Forever” hitmaker back to the Instagram streets.

While her return was a joyful one, some social media users couldn’t help but pick on Shozi’s photo-shoot set-up.

For the snaps, Shozi had a cute set up inside a bathroom. There were black, gold and silver balloons and also a silver foil backdrop.

The mom of three is seen dressed in a little leopard print number and is joined by friends. In one of her snaps, Shozi poses inside the bathtub.

Prior to Mpisane getting hitched to someone else, he and Sithelo were publicly romantically linked.

Shozi had been vocal on social media, saying she wouldn’t leave Mpisane, even if he cheated on her.

She once said she’d rather fight a lion than break up with him and that she and Mpisane would only be separated by death.

Mpisane had even bought Sithelo a new luxury BMW a month prior to going official with Louw.

While Mpisane has moved on, Shozi is yet to delete the picture of him on her Instagram account.

  • Here are 5 things you shouldn’t trade for love

Here are 5 things you shouldn’t trade for love

You may have heard many people tell you their own personal view about love. Many people may have taught you how to love with everything you have, but the truth is that, no matter how deeply in love you are with someone, there are some limitations you must not exceed, otherwise, you may have problem in the long run.

When you are truly in love with someone, everything about them matters to you more than yourself. That is why we are always ready to give up anything for someone we love.

However, there are things you must not trade for love no matter how much love you have for your lover. These things can be found below.

    1. Your peace of mind
What is love if there is no peace? It is said that love is reciprocal. Of course, this statement is accurate because when you love someone, they are expected to love you back. That is why you should not love someone who doesn’t love you if you want a healthy relationship or marriage.

It is better to stay unloved than to lose your peace of mind over love. The truth is, if your lover causes you to lose your peace of mind, he or she does not love you. You are actually wasting your time with such lover.

    2. Your freedom
Being in love is not synonymous to being in prison. Why would you trade your freedom for love? You can only exercise and express your love truly when you have your freedom, otherwise, you will only be forced to do so.

To succeed in life, you must break off from anything that will interfere with your freedom, love inclusive. Have you seen someone who is happy in a relationship or marriage where he or she is denied of their freedom? When falling in love, consider your freedom first. Ask yourself some important questions about your freedom with such person.

    3. Your career
Do not trade your career for love. This is usually seen in women. Some women can give up on their career once they are in a serious relationship, but usually, some do this once they are married. Some men usually discourage their female lovers from carrying on their careers, promising to take care of them.

As a human being, you need to follow your career and work towards achieving it. Do not exchange your career for love as you may regret it when the love can no longer be found.

    4. Your happiness
One of the important things you must not trade for love is your happiness. You are not in love if you are not happy in your relationship or marriage. When it comes to love, you have to be very careful. You have to look before you leap, otherwise, you will regret it when you trade your happiness for love.

Some people are in relationships or marriages where they are maltreated, yet they are still in love with their significant others. This is because they chose love over happiness. In other words, they traded love over happiness.

    5. Your respect
Just like love, respect is reciprocal. When you respect someone, they are expected to respect you too. But when you trade your respect for love, your value in that relationship or marriage is reduced. Therefore, of what use are you in your relationship or marriage when you are considered valueless?

If you must fall in love, get someone who understands you. Someone who knows your worth and value. And someone who will forever respect you for who you are. No matter how much you love the person, do not lose your respect over love.

  • Facts about cardiac arrest

    Facts about cardiac arrest

Our heart is one of the toughest organs of our body. Its main function is to pump oxygenated blood throughout the body. A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops functioning unexpectedly.

It generally results from an electrical disturbance in the heart, which causes irregular heartbeats. This hampers the pumping action of the heart, stopping the blood flow through the body. A person can lose consciousness and die within minutes if immediate treatment is not given.

What are the symptoms of cardiac arrest?
Cardiac arrest is a sudden and severe condition. It can cause:

    Sudden collapse
    Loss of consciousness
    Loss of breathing
    No heartbeat
Even though cardiac arrest is an unexpected condition, you may experience certain symptoms moments before a complete arrest. The early symptoms are as follows:

    Difficulty in breathing
    Feeling dizzy
    Chest pain
    Nausea and vomiting
    When to see a doctor?
You should talk to your doctor immediately if you notice symptoms like difficulty in breathing, chest pain, loss of consciousness, or any of the signs mentioned above.

    What are its causes?
Most of the cardiac arrests happen when the electrical system od a diseased heart malfunctions. Such malfunction may cause an abnormal heart rhythm like ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. A few cardiac arrests can also be caused by extreme slowing of the heart’s rhythm (also called bradycardia).

Such irregular heartbeats which can cause cardiac arrest, are considered life-threatening arrhythmias.

Other causes of cardiac arrest include:

Scarring of the heart tissue: This scarring could be due to a prior heart attack or may be another cause. A heart that’s enlarged or scarred from any cause is likely to develop life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. The first 6 months following a heart attack represents a particularly high-risk period for sudden cardiac arrest in those patients suffering from a atherosclerotic heart disease.
Cardiomyopathy (a thickened heart muscle): Damage to your heart muscle can be the cause of heart valve disease, high blood pressure, or other causes. An unhealthy heart muscle may make you more prone to a sudden cardiac arrest, especially if you also have heart failure.
Heart medications: Under some conditions, various heart drugs can set the stage for arrhythmias that may lead to a sudden cardiac arrest. This may look odd but, anti-arrhythmic medications used for the treatment of arrhythmias can sometimes produce ventricular arrhythmias even at normally prescribed doses. This is known as a “proarrhythmic” effect. Major changes in blood levels of magnesium and potassium (from using diuretics, for instance) can also cause life-threatening arrhythmias and cardiac arrest.
Electrical abnormalities: Certain electrical abnormalities such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and Long QT syndrome may cause sudden cardiac arrest in children and young people.
Recreational drug use: Use of some recreational drugs may also cause sudden cardiac arrest, even in otherwise healthy people
Blood vessel abnormalities: In some rare cases, congenital blood vessel abnormalities, particularly in the aorta or coronary arteries, may lead to cardiac arrest. Often the adrenaline released during intense physical activity acts as a trigger for a sudden cardiac arrest when such abnormalities are present.
Who is at risk for cardiac arrest?
You may be at risk of having a cardiac arrest if you suffer from the following heart conditions:

    Coronary Artery Disease
    Irregular Heart Valves
    Heart Arrhythmia
    Electrical Impulse Problems
    Previous Episode of Heart Attack
Apart from the above-mentioned conditions, there are various other risk factors like

Age: With increasing age, the risk of a cardiac arrest increases.
Family history: If anyone in your family has had a history of heart problems, you are at a greater risk.
Stress: Stress is a major culprit. It is linked to a number of diseases, including cardiac arrests.
Electrolyte disturbance( electrolytes such as potassium, calcium, magnesium etc)
What are the treatment options available?
The available treatment options include immediate treatment and long term treatment.

    Immediate treatment
CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is needed for treating sudden cardiac arrest immediately.
Defibrillation: A device is programmed to send an electrical shock to the heart when it detects ventricular defibrillation. This stops the heart momentarily and causes it to go back to its normal rhythm.

  • Master KG hits back at criticism over Makhadzi

Master KG hits back at criticism over Makhadzi

Master KG has been tagged an opportunist since he reunited with Makhadzi.

The two were lovers, who broke up years after dating, and the Ghanama hitmaker revealed in 2020 that they’ve gone their separate ways.

Some months into 2021, it was observed that they got close, and people assumed they were back to making music together, not knowing there’s more to what was perceived.

They made things more interesting after hinting at being back as lovers, as they kissed on stage and the music producer called the singer his wife on stage and on Facebook.

Fans have made different reviews about their reunion; while some are excited, a few are curious and others are furious, as they dragged the Jerusalema hitmaker for taking advantage of the singer, because she’s become one of the biggest singer in SA.

After weeks of being called an opportunist, Master KG decided to respond; he said people should get their facts straight, as he is not with Makhadzi because of the money, but has more than what people think.

“I was shocked when kg was going to makhadzi gigs to ‘support her’. Makhadzi is more popular now. Gets more bookings. Has more followers on FB. That was an attempt by KG to revive his wanning career. shine your light with Akon flopped. Money giveaways on twitter didn’t help,” a tweep wrote.

In response, the DJ said: “You dont know sh$t!my guy only if you knew how much money i get/got you wouldn’t be talking this shit..and that song that you say flopped thers no song in SA in 2021 that can match its streaming numbers…yall should stop this shit now.”

  • Meet the winner of song of the year, DJ Hlo

Meet the winner of song of the year, DJ Hlo

Ukhozi FM’s annual New Year’s Eve countdown has, over the decades, become the most important signifier of the biggest hit of the year.

Artists clamour to be included in the radio station’s Top 10 list. And with nearly eight million listeners, featuring on the station’s Record of the Year list means you have a bona fide hit song.

So imagine South Africa’s surprise when a song that most people had not heard before was voted the Record of the Year by Ukhozi FM listeners.

As people captured the moment we crossed over to 2022, videos showed their faces going from excitement to confusion as Isibani by DJ Hlo blared from their speakers. Conversation soon started, with many asking about the song and who the artist was and how they had managed to beat fan favourite songs like Adiwele by Young Stunna, Osama by Zakes Bantwini, and Wena Nkosi Uyazi by Jumbo.

DJ Hlo, real name Hlosiwe Mthalane, released Isibani featuring DJ Manzo and Sboniso in October last year. By winning Ukhozi FM’s record of the year 2021, she has made history by being the first female DJ to take home the title.

The 24-year-old from Seaview in Durban released the track as a single and went on to top the chart on Radiomonitor.

The subject around the “song of the year” causes a stir .Photo Social Media
Radiomonitor tracks the worldwide airplay of songs, with the information given to record labels and radio stations. Isibani was easily the most popular song with Ukhozi FM listeners in their poll.

DJ Hlo said her love for music started at the age of seven as she was raised in a musically-inclined family. She said she grew up under a lot of musical influence and that she grew up listening to icons such as Brenda Fassie, which made her fall in love with music even more. She said she decided to become a DJ after completing her degree in Industrial Psychology and Management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

“The journey has had its ups and downs, but I am continuously learning and gaining new knowledge as I grow in the industry. I am looking forward to learning new things and exploring my musical talents,” said DJ Hlo.

Asked about the type of music she does and the whole meaning behind Isibani, she described her music as an alignment of emotionally raw lyricism and intensely moving instrumentals that cut straight into the listener’s heart.

“It is very dynamic and can be enjoyed by everyone, from the young to the old. The word ‘Isibani’ is basically translated to ‘Light’. Overall the song is a dedication to our loved ones as they bring light into our lives and encourage us to be better versions of ourselves. They push us to do more. I just hope the song brings something positive to listeners.”

About the win, she said she feels extremely content to be the first female DJ to win the Ukhozi FM record of the year.

“Honestly it is taking time to kick in. It is a huge achievement and will definitely be written in the history books. It is my legacy. I am just so thankful to everyone who voted for my song to be number one. It is also hard to believe that I do not deserve to be in the top ten because those who voted for the song clearly thought otherwise. After all, voting lines were open to the whole of South Africa, so everybody had an opportunity to vote for their favourite. I have a very strong support system, so I do not mind any criticism directed towards me. I do not put any negativity to heart because although there are people who are criticising me, there are also those who are rooting for me with all the positive comments.”

What does the future hold for her?

She is currently working on an EP and will be releasing it amidst the song of the year hype as a token of appreciation for her fans.
